Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of our most asked questions. If you cannot find your answer, please contact us and one of our friendly staff will be able to help.
01. Do I need a referral to be examined at The Cross Radiology?
Yes, you must be referred by a doctor or appropriate health professional to be seen at The Cross Radiology. Your doctor will determine what sort of examination is best suited to your needs.
02. Do I need an appointment or can I just walk in?
If you require an X-Ray, you may walk in. For all other examinations including CT, Ultrasound, Mammography and Procedures, it is important to make an appointment. This is to secure your time with the most appropriate technician. You may also need preparation prior to your examination. We accept walk-ins on a daily basis, however this is dependent on the type of examination and our workload on the day. We will endeavour to fit in urgent cases as soon as possible.
03. I'm not sure what sort of examination my doctor has requested. How do I make an appointment?
We understand that it is sometimes difficult to read a medical request form. If you are unsure which examination your doctor has requested for, you may bring the form to us in person so we can make an appointment for you on the spot, or alternatively, take a picture of the form and email it to us. Once we have received your form, we will contact you to make an appointment. You may also use the "Appointment Request" tool on our website to send in your request form.
04. What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Please bring your request form, and if applicable, your Medicare, DVA, Pension or HCC. If your examination is worker's compensation, please also bring your approval letter from your insurance/employer.
Some examinations require previous images/reports to be available, and if this is the case, we will ask you to bring any relevant documents during the appointment process.

05. Can I bring someone to my appointment?
As we are a small practice and have company capacity protocols in place, we currently only allow patients to wait inside our practice. If you require a carer or guardian, you may bring 1 person to accompany you to your appointment. For other exceptions, please discuss this with our staff prior to your appointment.
06. What do I do once I arrive at your practice?
Please have your documents ready and see one of our friendly staff members at the front desk. You will be registered and the technician will be notified of your arrival. Once your room is prepared, your name will be called.
07. Who will perform my scan?
If you require an X-Ray or CT, a radiographer will perform your scan. If you require an Ultrasound, a Sonographer will perform your scan. If you require a procedure such as an injection or biopsy, a Radiologist will perform the procedure.
08. Do I need to pay for my examination?
We bulk bill most examinations. This means we bill Medicare directly, and are assigned your benefit. There are some examinations and procedures that are not bulk billed, and this is best discussed when making an appointment. You will always be told prior to commencing your examination if payment is required.
If you do not hold a Medicare card, our private rates apply to the examinations you undergo in our practice.

09. I've injured myself at work. Can I come to The Cross Radiology for a scan?
If you've injured yourself at work, the first step is to tell your employer. They will contact the company's insurance to inform them of the injury. A claim number and case manager will be assigned to you. You may be asked to see a doctor to be treated/referred for imaging.
If you are referred to The Cross Radiology for a scan, the examination must have been approved by the insurance company for us to bill them directly for the service. This means that they will require to view the imaging request to assess if the examination is necessary for your care. Once this has been approved, they will issue a formal letter which will be sent to the worker. Please bring the doctor's request form and the approval letter to your examination. If the examination is urgent or has not yet been approved, you may pay for the service yourself and ask for reimbursement from the insurance company/employer at a later date.

10. When will my doctor receive my results?
Results for general examinations at The Cross Radiology take about 3 hours to be finalised. Some examinations may take up to 48 hours. These results can be collected by the patient or sent directly to your treating doctor. If your doctor does not store films, we may give you the films immediately after your examination and send the report electronically to them. Please discuss report delivery options with our front desk staff during registration.
11. Is there radiation involved in my scan?
There is radiation involved in all X-Ray and CT studies. Generally, the benefit of the X-ray procedure is far more important than the small estimated risk of the effects of radiation. The dose of radiation used in a CT scan is generally small and rarely produces harmful effects. The radiation dose will be kept as low as possible for your scan.
12. Can someone else collect my results?
If someone else will be collecting your images/reports on your behalf, you must make this known to staff. We value your privacy, including your sensitive medical records. You may fill in an authorisation to collect on site, or call our practice to let us know. We may ask you a series of personal questions to verify your identity.
13. I have lost my results. Can I request for a reprint?
We are able to produce a copy of your diagnostic report at any time. If you require a reproduction of your images, this may incur a fee. Please speak to our front desk staff if you require a reprint of old films.
14. What are the cleaning protocols at The Cross Radiology?
The Cross Radiology regularly conducts risk management assessments of all diagnostic imaging procedures for potential transmission of infectious agents and provide orientation and training to all staff on infection control for all new diagnostic imaging procedures and/or changes to existing diagnostic imaging procedures. Our front desk staff regularly disinfects surfaces and items (such as pens and clipboards) throughout the day to ensure transmission is minimised. Our technicians clean all patient beds and tools (such as transducers) after every patient. The whole practice is then cleaned again at the end of the day, every day.
